Finland Considers Border Crossing Restrictions with Russia

Finland is considering measures to restrict the operation of border crossing points (BCPs) with Russia, and some points may be closed, according to the MTV Uutiset portal, citing the head of the country’s Ministry of the Interior, Mari Rantanen.

“In recent times, a significant number of Russians and citizens from other countries have crossed the border with Finland without the necessary documents. The Finnish Ministry of the Interior is preparing a proposal based on Article 16 of the Border Guard Act, according to which border crossing points may be closed or restricted,” the publication states.

According to Rantanen, a final decision on restrictive measures has not yet been made.

She noted that, initially, efforts will be made to regulate border crossing through softer methods, and only if it becomes impossible to address the problem, radical measures may be considered.
