Coronavirus Effect on Airports

Major airports in the UK and Europe have been left almost empty as demand for air travel has fallen following the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak.

Sheremetyevo International Airport will temporarily close Terminal D for arrivals and departures beginning at 00:00 hours on April 1, 2020. The closure will last until further notice.

Sheremetyevo has taken this measure because of the reduction in passenger traffic and the introduction of additional restrictions on international air transportation. Specifically, the Government of the Russian Federation has ordered the termination of regular and charter flights from airports in Russian cities to airports in foreign countries starting 00:00 hours on March 27, 2020 as part of national efforts to combat the spread of coronavirus infection.

The remaining international arrivals and departures scheduled for Terminal D will be transferred to Terminal F, while domestic flights scheduled for Terminal D will be transferred to Terminal B.

Following the suspension of international scheduled and non-scheduled passenger flights, as of 17 March, Riga Airport will continue operations on a limited basis, serving repatriation flights, cargo transportation and other permitted flights.

Domestic flights from Riga to Liepāja operated by the national airline airBaltic will also continue.

Schiphol Airport will remain open with a heavily reduced capacity for passenger flights that are still arriving and departing, as well as repatriation of Dutch citizens, freight traffic, emergency services and alternative aircraft.

Tallinn Airport working in a limited capacity, receiving flights from Belavia (Minsk), easyJet (London) and Lufthansa (Frankfurt).

The severe and unparalleled impact of COVID-19 on the global aviation sector has led Gatwick Airport to make the difficult decision to consolidate passenger processing and facilities into the airport’s South Terminal and to limit scheduled flights on its runway to between 1400 and 2200, with effect from 1 April 2020.

Istanbul Sabiha Gökcen International Airport has stopped  all domestic and international flights as of March 27, 2020 as only Turkish Airlines has been authorized for a limited number of domestic flights.

Following the Government’s latest instructions in response to the Coronavirus outbreak, London City Airport has made the decision to temporarily suspend all commercial and private flights from the airport as of March 25, 2020. It will now be used by the government.

Heathrow will overhaul its operations this week to prioritise cargo flights carrying pharmaceutical products.

Paris-Orly Airport is temporarily closed from March 30th at 11:30pm until further notice. All flights due to be operated to / form Paris-Orly are reassigned at Paris-CDG

Only Aeroflot, United Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines are continuing operations at Ben-Gurion Airport. Ramon Airport had been shut.

Phuket International Airport will close April 10-30 as the island enters its final stage of lockdown, with no unauthorised persons allowed into or out of Phuket.
