Berlin Allows Women to Swim Topless in Swimming Pools

The obligatory wearing of the upper part of the swimsuit was considered by the authorities of Berlin to be discrimination against women.

The city authorities of Berlin have allowed women to swim topless in all city pools. This is reported by the official website of the city hall.

It is noted that the city council received a complaint about gender discrimination. A resident of Berlin was outraged that she was not allowed to swim in the pool with bare breasts, although there are no formal prohibitions on this.

The woman emphasized that the general rules for using the pools require the wearing of “commercially available swimwear” – without any clarification regarding gender differences and restrictions.

The Berlin City Council considered the complaint and decided to further clarify in the rules that “female persons, as well as persons with breasts perceived as female” are not required to wear a swimsuit top in city pools.

“The adopted decision creates equal rights for all Berliners, whether they are men, women or non-binary persons, and also creates legal certainty for the staff of bathing establishments,” the mayor’s office explained.

Last year British airline Virgin Atlantic, owned by billionaire Richard Branson, abolished strict rules on work uniforms for staff. Aircraft crew members can now “express their gender identity” as they see fit.
