Kilchoan Estate by Dunton has officially opened on Scotland‘s remote Knoydart Peninsula, transforming a historic Highland estate into an exclusive luxury retreat that combines heritage conservation, contemporary design and immersive nature experiences.
Dating back to the 12th century, the estate has entered a new chapter following its restoration by owners Katrin and Christoph Henkel, whose vision draws inspiration from Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado by preserving historic properties while creating distinctive hospitality experiences.
Historic Estate Reimagined
The estate has opened with five carefully restored stone and timber cottages accommodating between two and five bedrooms. Two additional cottages are scheduled to open in early 2027.
Designed by London-based Waldo Works, the interiors combine local stone, pine and slate with handcrafted furnishings, textiles from renowned British and Irish makers, and artwork personally selected by Katrin Henkel. The result reflects the colours and textures of the surrounding Highlands while maintaining the estate’s historic character.
Wellness and Outdoor Experiences
Guests can enjoy a newly opened spa featuring a sauna and yoga studio or gather at The Long House for communal dining inspired by Dunton’s signature hospitality concept.
The estate also offers a range of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, sea kayaking, wild swimming, boat excursions and fishing. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter red deer, golden eagles, otters, seals and other native species that inhabit the Knoydart Peninsula.
After dark, the estate’s remote location provides excellent stargazing beneath some of the darkest skies in the United Kingdom.
Highland Cuisine Takes Centre Stage
The opening also introduces a new culinary programme led by Chef Jamie Smart, whose menus celebrate seasonal Scottish produce sourced from the Highlands and surrounding coastal waters.
Guests can expect dishes featuring locally smoked salmon, hand-dived scallops, wild venison, foraged ingredients and regional produce, served in The Long House, as private dining experiences or as gourmet picnic hampers for outdoor adventures.
Sustainable Hospitality
Operating without fossil fuels, Kilchoan Estate incorporates energy-efficient heating and cooling systems while respecting the integrity of its historic buildings. The estate also works with local organisations, including the Knoydart Foundation, to support conservation, cultural heritage and community initiatives.
Rates begin at £1,100 per night for two guests and include accommodation, meals, wines and spirits, as well as ferry transfers. Additional guests are charged £300 per person per night.
