A new tourism experience in Rome is combining fitness, history and the city’s famous feline residents through a guided running tour designed for active travelers.
Created by ArcheoRunning, an initiative that blends running club activities with cultural tours, the experience offers visitors a unique way to explore the Italian capital while learning about its archaeological heritage and meeting some of its best-known cat colonies.
The tour is aimed at travelers looking for an alternative to traditional sightseeing while enjoying Rome’s quieter early-morning atmosphere.
Six-Kilometre Route Through Historic Rome
The guided run begins at around 6 a.m. and covers approximately six kilometres through some of Rome’s most iconic locations.
Led by ArcheoRunning founder :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}, the route starts near the ancient Temple of Isis and Serapis archaeological complex in the Campo Marzio district.
Participants then continue to the famous Area Sacra at Largo Argentina, pass the :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1} and finish near the :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}.
Organizers emphasize that the pace is intentionally relaxed, allowing runners to stop, listen to commentary and enjoy the surroundings.
Rome’s Famous Cat Colonies
A distinctive feature of the tour is its focus on Rome’s well-known community cat colonies.
The Italian capital is home to thousands of free-roaming cats, many of which live among the city’s archaeological sites and historic ruins.
One of the most famous colonies can be found at the Largo Argentina archaeological area, where cats have become an attraction in their own right.
In 2001, approximately 150 cats living among the ancient temples at Torre Argentina were officially recognized as part of Rome’s historic heritage.
Cats Protected By Italian Law
Rome operates sterilization programs to help manage the city’s cat population while allowing the animals to remain in the locations where they were born.
Italian legislation protects these urban cat colonies, which have become an established part of the city’s cultural identity.
As a result, visitors frequently encounter cats resting among ancient ruins, archaeological sites and public spaces throughout the city.
A Different Way To Explore The Eternal City
Prices for the ArcheoRunning experience start at €50 per person, with discounts available for larger groups.
By combining exercise, local history and one of Rome’s most beloved urban traditions, the tour offers a distinctive alternative for visitors seeking a more active and unconventional way to discover the Eternal City.
