Qantas Delays World’s Longest Nonstop Flights Launch

Qantas has delayed the launch of what is expected to become the world’s longest nonstop commercial flight as the airline pushes back its ambitious Project Sunrise programme due to aircraft delivery challenges.

The Australian carrier had originally planned to launch nonstop flights connecting Sydney with London and New York during early 2027 but now expects operations to begin later that year.

The delay extends a project that has already spent nearly a decade moving from concept to reality.

Aircraft Delays Push Back Ultra Long-Haul Launch

According to Qantas, the main obstacle remains delivery schedules for specially modified Airbus A350-1000 aircraft designed specifically for ultra long-haul operations.

The airline expects to receive the first customized aircraft in April 2027, delaying operational preparations for the planned routes.

The aircraft being built for Project Sunrise differ significantly from standard configurations and include specialized modifications required for flights lasting around 20 hours.

Executives say updated launch timing is expected to be confirmed later this year.

Special Aircraft Designed For Extreme Flight Durations

The customized aircraft will feature fewer seats than standard versions in order to provide greater passenger comfort during exceptionally long journeys.

Planned cabin features include expanded premium spaces, dedicated rest zones and redesigned first-class accommodation aimed at improving comfort during ultra long flights.

The aircraft also require additional fuel capacity to support nonstop operations over distances that currently require connections.

Project Sunrise aircraft are expected to become some of the most specialized long-haul commercial aircraft operating anywhere in the world.

Project Sunrise Has Been Nearly Ten Years In Development

Qantas first outlined ambitions for nonstop ultra long-haul routes nearly a decade ago as airlines explored new possibilities enabled by advances in aircraft technology.

The project eventually expanded to include multiple potential routes connecting Australia directly with major cities across Europe and North America.

Supporters argue ultra long-haul flights eliminate transit complications and reduce dependency on intermediate hubs, particularly during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.

If successful, Project Sunrise could significantly reshape how airlines approach some of the world’s longest international routes.
