Romania has accused Russia of a serious escalation after a drone involved in overnight attacks against Ukraine entered Romanian airspace and crashed into a residential apartment building.
The incident, which injured two people, has triggered diplomatic responses from Bucharest and prompted calls for urgent consultations within NATO.
Drone Crashes Into Residential Building In Galați
According to Romania’s Ministry of Defence, one of the drones involved in attacks against Ukraine crossed into Romanian airspace before striking the roof of a residential apartment block in the city of Galați.
Authorities confirmed that two people were injured during the incident.
The event marks one of the most serious reported cases involving Russian drones directly impacting civilian infrastructure inside Romanian territory.
Romania Scrambled Fighter Jets During Incident
Romanian authorities said two fighter aircraft were scrambled from Fetești Air Base at approximately 01:19 local time after the drone entered national airspace.
Officials confirmed Romanian pilots had authorisation to engage the target if necessary.
The military response reflects increasing concern among eastern NATO members regarding repeated incidents involving missiles and drones approaching alliance borders.
Bucharest Calls Incident A Serious Escalation
Romanian officials described the drone strike on residential property as a “serious escalation” by Moscow.
Bucharest has already informed both NATO and European Union partners about the incident and announced plans for diplomatic responses.
Romania is also requesting accelerated deliveries of additional counter-drone capabilities to strengthen air defence systems.
NATO Expected To Discuss Incident
The incident is expected to intensify discussions within NATO regarding air defence coordination and protection of eastern alliance members.
Romania shares a long border with Ukraine and has repeatedly dealt with drone debris and airspace violations since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.
Previous incidents involving falling drone fragments near border regions have already increased pressure for stronger regional air defence measures.
Growing Risks Near NATO Borders
As attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure continue, neighbouring countries increasingly face risks associated with missiles, drones and airspace violations.
Security analysts warn that even unintended incidents involving military equipment crossing borders create additional risks of escalation and place greater pressure on regional defence systems.
The latest incident is likely to further accelerate discussions around NATO border security and drone defence capabilities across Eastern Europe.
