Oura has unveiled its latest wearable device, introducing what the company says is the smallest smart ring currently available on the market.
The new Oura Ring 5 significantly reduces the physical size of previous models while maintaining the health tracking features that helped drive the rapid growth of smart rings as a wearable category.
Ring 5 Shrinks Size Without Sacrificing Sensors
According to Oura, the new ring is approximately 40% smaller than the previous generation while retaining the same sensing capabilities, tracking accuracy and health monitoring functions.
The company says miniaturising the device required overcoming significant engineering challenges involving battery size, sensor placement and internal hardware packaging.
Oura CEO Tom Hale described the redesign as one of the company’s most difficult technological projects to date.
Comfort Becomes Key Selling Point
The company believes smaller form factors could significantly improve long-term wearability, one of the biggest challenges for wearable devices.
Executives say the reduced size makes the ring feel almost unnoticeable during daily activities, exercise and sleep tracking.
Improved comfort is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage as wearable companies push for devices that users can comfortably wear continuously.
New Sizing System May Require Extra Attention
Like the previous generation, Oura recommends customers check sizing carefully before upgrading.
Because of the redesigned internal components, some users may find themselves between sizes and may need to choose either a slightly larger or smaller ring for better comfort.
To address this, Oura is encouraging customers to use an updated sizing kit before purchasing.
The new ring will also launch with a narrower sizing range compared with its predecessor.
While the previous generation supported sizes 4 through 15, Oura Ring 5 will initially only be available in sizes 6 through 13.
Company representatives say the decision reflects ongoing analysis of customer demand while the previous generation remains relatively new following its late-2024 launch.
Customers looking for additional materials may also face limitations, as Oura confirmed ceramic versions will not be available at launch.
Pricing And Availability Confirmed
Oura Ring 5 begins shipping on June 4.
Base finishes will start at $399, while premium finishes including gold and brushed silver will cost $499.
The company is also introducing a portable charging case sold separately for $99.
Smart Ring Competition Continues Growing
Smart rings have become one of the fastest-growing segments within consumer wearables as companies compete to deliver health tracking in smaller, less intrusive formats.
Unlike smartwatches, rings offer continuous monitoring with fewer screens and notifications, positioning them more heavily around passive health data collection.
Wearables Industry Shifting Toward Smaller Devices
The launch highlights a broader industry trend toward miniaturisation as wearable companies attempt to reduce friction between technology and everyday use.
Manufacturers increasingly view comfort, continuous wear and battery efficiency as essential factors for long-term adoption.
For Oura, Ring 5 represents a major bet that smaller devices could accelerate the transition from occasional wearable use to constant health monitoring.
