Canada has introduced sweeping temporary border restrictions and quarantine measures as authorities move to prevent the spread of Ebola virus disease amid a growing outbreak in central Africa.

The Public Health Agency of Canada announced the emergency measures under the Quarantine Act, describing the decision as a precautionary response to rising international health concerns.

Canada Suspends Multiple Immigration Documents

Beginning at 23:59 EDT on 27 May 2026, Canada suspended the issuance and processing of several immigration documents for residents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda and South Sudan.

The restrictions cover temporary resident visas, electronic travel authorisations (eTAs) and even previously approved permanent resident visas.

The measures are currently scheduled to remain in place until at least 29 August 2026.

Mandatory Quarantine Rules Introduced For Returning Travellers

Canadian citizens, permanent residents and other exempt travellers who have visited affected countries within the previous 21 days must complete mandatory self-isolation for three weeks after arrival.

Travellers without suitable quarantine arrangements will be accommodated in government-designated facilities.

Officials also confirmed that passengers displaying symptoms associated with Ebola will be transferred directly to hospital for medical assessment.

Response Linked To Growing Ebola Outbreak

The measures follow concerns over an expanding Ebola outbreak in northeastern Congo, which health authorities warn may continue for an extended period.

Canadian officials said the restrictions are being implemented out of an “abundance of caution” despite Canada never having recorded an imported Ebola case.

Authorities emphasised that prevention and rapid containment remain priorities when responding to highly infectious diseases.

Travel Industry Could Face Additional Disruption

The restrictions may create complications for international travellers, businesses and immigration applicants with links to affected regions.

Travel operators and immigration specialists are also monitoring whether additional screening measures could be expanded if outbreak conditions worsen.

Officials also referenced upcoming international events and rising passenger volumes as factors influencing the decision.
