Hotel visionary Ian Schrager is preparing to introduce PUBLIC West Hollywood, a new hospitality concept that aims to redefine luxury, nightlife and social living in Los Angeles.
The project continues Schrager’s decades-long influence on global hospitality, following a career that reshaped nightlife culture through Studio 54 and later transformed the boutique hotel industry worldwide.
Ian Schrager Continues Reinventing Hospitality
Schrager describes PUBLIC West Hollywood as a hotel built around contradiction, combining glamour and comfort, energy and calm, sophistication and disruption into a single experience.
The concept is designed to reflect the cultural identity of Los Angeles while avoiding what Schrager sees as conventional luxury clichés.
Instead of traditional hospitality formulas, PUBLIC West Hollywood focuses on openness, flexibility and emotional connection.
Hotel Designed Around California Lifestyle
Approximately 75 percent of the hotel’s public space is located outdoors, embracing Southern California’s climate and social culture.
The property will include outdoor dining areas, wellness programming, lounge spaces and rooftop gathering areas inspired by the lifestyle of Los Angeles.
At the centre of the development is “The Roof,” a three-quarter-acre private rooftop park featuring panoramic views across the Hollywood Hills, downtown Los Angeles and the wider LA Basin.
The space will include picnic areas, wellness classes, sports activities, art installations, campfires and an oversized outdoor movie screen.
Anti-Design Philosophy Shapes Guestrooms
PUBLIC West Hollywood’s guestrooms follow what Schrager describes as an “anti-design” philosophy focused on comfort, simplicity and emotional atmosphere rather than excessive visual decoration.
Each room will function as a private screening room featuring an 11-foot projection surface and custom-built laser projection technology designed to recreate a cinema experience inside the guestroom.
Schrager said the concept blends sleep, entertainment, work and social living into a single flexible space.
Nightlife Concept Draws Inspiration From Studio 54
The hotel will also feature an immersive nightclub experience inspired by Schrager’s Studio 54 legacy.
The venue is designed around sound, intimacy and unpredictability, combining speakeasy aesthetics with immersive music experiences intended to recreate the emotional energy of classic nightlife culture.
PUBLIC Focuses On “Luxury For All”
Central to the PUBLIC concept is Schrager’s philosophy of “Luxury For All,” which rejects traditional ideas of exclusivity and status-driven hospitality.
Instead, the brand positions luxury around freedom, comfort, simplicity, personalised service and emotional experiences rather than visible extravagance.
According to Schrager, PUBLIC West Hollywood is intended not simply as a hotel, but as a cultural statement reflecting contemporary lifestyles, creativity and social interaction in Los Angeles.
