Casa La Mariposa of Maria Buchinger Opens As An Intimate New Wellness Retreat In Marbella

Casa La Mariposa, the former private villa of Maria Buchinger in Marbella, is opening to guests for the first time this May, introducing a deeply personal new chapter for Buchinger Wilhelmi’s medical wellness offering.

For decades, the property was a private home rather than a hospitality address. Its transformation into a guest retreat marks a rare kind of luxury wellness opening, one shaped less by brand theatre and more by history, privacy and a philosophy that has been lived across generations.

The villa forms part of the wider Buchinger Wilhelmi world, whose approach to therapeutic fasting traces back to Dr Otto Buchinger, the German physician who developed a medically supervised fasting method after his own experience with serious rheumatic illness.

A Villa With A Personal Wellness Legacy

Maria Buchinger, Dr Buchinger’s daughter, became one of the central figures in carrying the family’s philosophy forward. After working with her father at the clinic in Überlingen on Lake Constance, she later helped establish the Spanish clinic in Marbella and made Casa La Mariposa her home.

That personal connection gives the villa a distinctive character. Rather than feeling like a newly manufactured wellness concept, the property carries the atmosphere of a home that has long been associated with reflection, restoration and disciplined simplicity.

Therapeutic Fasting Or Regenerative Nutrition

Guests staying at Casa La Mariposa can follow either the Buchinger therapeutic fasting programme or a regenerative dietary programme, while still benefiting from the medical and holistic expertise of the wider clinic.

The experience includes medical consultations within the villa, personalised nutritional guidance, meals prepared by the clinic and served privately, and support from a dedicated 24-hour on-site nurse.

A 24-hour concierge service is also available, allowing guests to focus fully on their programme rather than the practical details of the stay.

Private Treatments And Daily Rituals

The retreat has been designed to offer a complete wellness rhythm, combining clinical supervision with privacy and restorative daily structure.

Physiotherapy, psychotherapy, yoga, Pilates and personal training can be arranged either inside the villa or across the clinic grounds.

Guests can also take part in guided morning beach walks, meditation sessions, therapeutic treatments and quiet evenings in the gardens, echoing the rhythm Maria Buchinger herself is said to have valued.

Renovated With History Intact

The villa has been renovated for its new role in collaboration with La Fábrica de Hielo and designer Andres Sauceda.

Selected works from Maria Buchinger’s private art collection have been incorporated into the interiors, preserving the sense of personal history that distinguishes the property from a conventional luxury retreat.

The name La Mariposa, Spanish for butterfly, reflects the idea of transformation at the heart of the Buchinger method.

Gardens, Wellness Spaces And Secluded Calm

The property includes tropical planting, medicinal herbs and secluded outdoor areas designed to create a sense of privacy and slow restoration.

Facilities include a heated swimming pool, outdoor garden sauna, treatment rooms, a yoga and Pilates studio, a meditation garden and a private gym.

The result is a retreat that brings together medical wellness, family heritage and the quiet intimacy of a private Marbella villa, offering guests a more personal way to experience the Buchinger Wilhelmi philosophy.
