Construction crews are now on site and momentum is building in Elk Grove, where Sky River Casino has officially launched the next phase of its transformation into a full-scale resort destination – a move that could redefine tourism in the Sacramento region.
What began as one of Northern California’s most successful new casinos is now evolving into something far more ambitious. The newly launched expansion centers on a 300-room hotel resort, but the broader vision goes well beyond adding overnight capacity. Backed by Wilton Rancheria, the project signals a long-term strategy to turn the property into a multi-day destination rather than a single-visit gaming stop.
The timeline reflects that scale. While earlier projections pointed to a quicker rollout, the current plan targets an opening in early 2028 – a shift that underscores how the project has grown in scope.
A resort designed to compete beyond the region
At the core of the development is a hotel that will anchor a wider ecosystem of experiences. Plans call for a 30,000-square-foot event and conference space, positioning the property to compete for conventions and large gatherings – a market traditionally dominated by larger urban centers.
New restaurants are also part of the expansion, alongside a day spa and a resort-style pool complex inspired by the atmosphere typically associated with Las Vegas. The aim is clear: extend guest stays, diversify revenue streams, and elevate the overall experience beyond gaming.
Michael Facenda has framed the development as a pivotal step in the casino’s evolution, emphasizing its role in positioning the property alongside more established resort destinations on the West Coast.
Growth already visible on the ground
The resort project is only one piece of a broader, phased expansion already underway. In recent months, the casino has added a large multi-level parking structure and expanded its gaming floor, increasing capacity and improving access as visitor numbers continue to climb.
Those early upgrades were designed to support exactly this moment – preparing the infrastructure for a much larger, more complex operation.
A defining project for Elk Grove
For Elk Grove, the implications stretch beyond the casino floor. The development is expected to draw overnight visitors, create new jobs, and generate sustained economic activity in a city that has been rapidly growing within the Sacramento metro area.
By the time the doors open in 2028, Sky River Casino will no longer be just a regional gaming venue. It will stand as a fully integrated resort – one designed to keep visitors on property for days, not hours, and to place Elk Grove firmly on the map as an emerging destination in Northern California.
