Madeira Reopens Iconic PR1 Hiking Trail with New Rules and Fees

One of Portugal’s most breathtaking hiking routes is finally reopening – but visitors will notice some important changes. After a two-year closure caused by devastating wildfires, Madeira’s legendary PR1 Vereda do Areeiro trail is set to welcome hikers again in April 2026.

Stretching 7 kilometres across the island’s dramatic central mountain range, the route connects three of Madeira’s highest peaks and is widely considered one of Europe’s most unforgettable trekking experiences.

The reopening marks a key moment for the island’s tourism recovery, but it also signals a shift toward tighter regulation as authorities move to protect the fragile landscape.

A trail above the clouds

The PR1 route links Pico do Areeiro (1,818 m), Pico das Torres (1,851 m) and Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), the highest point on the island. The hike typically takes around three hours, guiding visitors through narrow ridgelines, carved tunnels in volcanic rock and viewpoints that often rise above the clouds.

Beyond the dramatic scenery, the trail is also known for its biodiversity. Hikers may spot rare bird species unique to the region, including the Madeira swift and local canary populations.

It’s this combination of raw landscape and ecological value that has made the route both iconic – and increasingly vulnerable.

New fees and mandatory registration

As part of its sustainable tourism strategy, branded “Explore. Respect. Preserve”, Madeira has introduced new access rules that came into effect at the start of 2026.

The PR1 trail will now require an entry fee of €10.50, reflecting the high maintenance costs and demand for the route. Other classified trails on the island, such as Levada do Rei, will carry lower fees – €4.50 on-site or €3 if booked in advance.

Crucially, all visitors must register before accessing the trail. This system is designed to manage foot traffic, prevent overcrowding and reduce environmental impact in sensitive areas.

A reopening timed with a major event

The return of the trail coincides with one of Madeira’s most important sporting events, the Madeira Island Ultra Trail, scheduled for April 25-26. The timing is expected to draw increased attention from both international runners and hiking enthusiasts.

However, local authorities are emphasizing responsible behavior. Visitors are strictly prohibited from picking plants, leaving waste or feeding wildlife – actions that can disrupt the delicate ecosystem of the central mountain massif.

A new era for nature tourism in Madeira

The reopening of PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is more than just the return of a popular hike. It represents a broader shift in how destinations like Madeira are balancing tourism growth with environmental protection.

For travelers, the experience remains as dramatic as ever – but now comes with a clearer message: access to these landscapes is a privilege, and preserving them is part of the journey.
