A new wave of young Europeans is about to get the chance to explore the continent for free. The popular DiscoverEU initiative, part of the Erasmus+ programme, is returning in 2026 with more than 40,000 rail passes available for eligible applicants.
The scheme allows teenagers to travel across Europe by train, opening the door to cultural discovery, new friendships and first independent adventures – all at no cost.
This year’s edition carries added significance, marking both a renewed focus on solidarity and the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Area, which has made border-free travel across much of Europe possible.
Travel across 29 countries
Successful applicants will be able to explore up to 29 countries within the Schengen zone, experiencing Europe’s diverse cultures, cuisines and landscapes.
The travel pass allows for one month of exploration, with up to seven travel days that can be used flexibly during the trip. Journeys can take place between July 2026 and September 2027, giving participants a wide window to plan their itinerary.
From major capitals to lesser-known regions, the programme is designed to encourage young people to see Europe beyond their own borders.
Who can apply
The initiative is targeted at a specific age group. Applicants must have been born between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008 to be eligible this year.
Participation is open not only to citizens of European Union countries but also to residents and nationals of countries associated with Erasmus+. These include Iceland, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia and Turkey.
More than just a free trip
While the headline appeal is free travel, DiscoverEU is also positioned as a cultural and educational experience. Participants are encouraged to engage with Europe’s heritage, arts and local traditions, turning the journey into more than just tourism.
The programme has grown in popularity in recent years, becoming a rite of passage for many young Europeans looking to gain independence and broaden their horizons.
