Galgorm Collection has submitted proposals to transform the 17th-century Galgorm Castle into a 30-bedroom boutique hotel as part of a £14 million restoration and regeneration project.
The plans have been lodged by Galgorm Castle Education and Preservation Limited (GCEP), the custodian of the castle, and outline a comprehensive redevelopment of the historic estate outside Ballymena.
Boutique Hotel and Arts Venues
Under the proposal, the Castle, Stables and Courtyard would be converted into a boutique hotel operated by Galgorm Collection. In addition, the Church and Ploughman’s House would be reimagined as two dedicated performance and arts venues.
The project aims to balance heritage preservation with contemporary hospitality, positioning the estate as both a high-end accommodation offering and a cultural destination.
Ian Paisley, chair of the Trustees of GCEP, said the ambition is to establish Galgorm Castle and Estate as a world-class destination that supports creative artists and performing groups while driving sustainable local economic growth.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The £14m investment is expected to generate 125 jobs during the construction phase and 90 permanent roles once the hotel and venues are operational.
The restoration will also reinstate original paths, trails and gardens, reconnecting the castle to its surrounding landscape and strengthening links with the nearby Gracehill.
Ian Paisley, Chair of the Trustees of GECP, said, “Our vision is to move beyond piecemeal development and address the estate’s decline through a single, holistic and genuinely transformative plan; one that respects Galgorm’s built fabric, honours its intangible heritage, and recognises the special place it holds in the heart of the community.
“We believe the proposal achieves an exciting and carefully considered balance between commercial viability and clear, lasting public benefit.”
Part of Wider Expansion Strategy
Galgorm Collection acquired the Galgorm Castle Estate and Roe Park Resort & Spa in 2024 for a combined £28m. The group also owns The Galgorm, The Rabbit Hotel & Retreat and The Old Inn.
Roe Park Resort is currently undergoing a £20m redevelopment. Following the acquisitions, Galgorm Collection committed a further £22m investment over the next five years to enhance its estates and strengthen their appeal across local, national and international markets.
If approved, the Galgorm Castle transformation would represent a significant addition to Northern Ireland’s boutique hospitality and cultural landscape.
