A new close-to-nature luxury retreat WildLand Hope is set to open in Sutherland in May 2026, promising high-end wilderness stays in one of the most remote and dramatic landscapes in the Scottish Highlands.
The development, known as Hope, is being delivered by WildLand, a conservation and hospitality company owned by entrepreneur and major local landowner Anders Holch Povlsen. The project centres on a historic shooting lodge and former hotel built in the 1870s, located near Ben Hope and Loch Hope, along the popular North Coast 500 tourism route.
Redesigned as an intimate hotel and exclusive-use retreat, Hope is described by WildLand as its most ambitious project to date. The scheme has taken six years to complete and represents a multi-million-pound investment in the far north of Scotland.
WildLand consultant Tim Kirkwood said the project was “a phenomenal achievement” and part of a long-term vision to restore landscapes, create employment and strengthen people’s connection with nature. Once open, Hope will bring the number of people employed by WildLand in the far north to around 80.
Set within a designated dark-sky region, the retreat has been designed to immerse guests in the rewilding and conservation work taking place across the estate. Ecological restoration and sustainable tourism principles underpin every aspect of the development, from construction to daily operations. Infrastructure such as an underground car park and a connecting tunnel has been built to reduce visual impact and preserve the area’s pristine setting.
Interior design studio Cecile & Boyd led the restoration, with a brief to blend historic character with contemporary creativity. Hope Lodge features seven bedrooms, each named in Gaelic and furnished with aged Georgian and Jacobean oak, alongside natural textiles including tweed, flax and oilskin.
The project has also involved the restoration of nearby cottages and the creation of a communal gathering space known as the Clachan. Close by is An Cala, a two-bedroom cabin set within woodland, featuring glass, wood and copper detailing and a private wood-fired hot tub.
Hope operates on an all-inclusive basis, with food, drink, equipment, facilities and daily guided activities included in the stay. Experiences led by field guides and conservationists range from paddleboarding along the northern coast and wild swimming beneath waterfalls to boat trips to Rabbit Island, trout fishing with estate ghillies, sound bath sessions and fire-cooked lunches in remote bothies on the shores of Loch Hope.
Chef-led foraging walks turn wild ingredients into evening meals, while conservation sessions and guided tree planting allow guests to take part directly in land regeneration. Guests choosing to explore independently are provided with all necessary equipment, from boots to boats.
Rates at Hope start from £1,100 per room per night on an all-inclusive basis, covering accommodation, all meals, house drinks and multiple guided daily experiences. Self-catering cottage accommodation is also available, with prices starting from £425 per night.
