The night train connecting Berlin and Paris will be discontinued in December 2025, according to Austria’s national railway operator ÖBB, which currently runs the route.
The decision follows France’s withdrawal of state subsidies for the service, which was launched just two years ago. According to Germany’s public broadcaster rbb, the French government had been providing around 10 million euros annually to support night train operations between the two capitals. Without that funding, maintaining the route has become unfeasible.
The Munich–Paris night train will also be discontinued by the end of 2025. However, ÖBB has confirmed that trains will continue to operate between Vienna and Brussels at least through 2026, though they will no longer extend to the French capital.
The Berlin–Paris route, introduced in late 2023, became a symbol of the revival of Europe’s night train network, appealing to travelers seeking more sustainable alternatives to air travel. But rising operational costs and the loss of financial support have forced the service’s closure.
