Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) Introduces New Nightjet Trains to Rome

Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) introduced its cutting-edge Nightjet trains on the Vienna–Rome and Munich–Rome routes. As of September 10, 2024, these state-of-the-art trains, developed by Siemens Mobility, promise a new level of comfort and safety, setting a high standard for overnight rail travel across Europe.

The newly designed Nightjet carriages, first unveiled in 2022, have attracted significant attention, evolving from conceptual designs to public operations. The first of these next-generation trains entered service in December 2023, connecting Austria and Germany. However, some routes faced temporary disruptions in the summer of 2024 due to railway maintenance across Germany, France, and Italy.

Features of the New Nightjet Trains

The new Nightjet trains feature seven carriages and can accommodate 254 passengers. The train configuration offers a variety of travel options, including:

  • Two seating carriages, one of which includes the driver’s cabin.
  • Three carriages featuring four-person compartments and innovative capsule mini-compartments, providing flexibility for solo or group travelers.
  • Two additional carriages with higher levels of comfort, offering “comfort” and “comfort-plus” classes for passengers seeking a more premium travel experience.

With this diverse setup, Nightjet is designed to cater to a broad range of traveler preferences, offering options for both budget-conscious and comfort-seeking passengers.

Fares and Discounts on the Vienna–Rome Route

Travelers on the Vienna–Rome route can take advantage of discounted fares through ÖBB’s Sparschiene program. Prices start at $37 for a standard seat, $58 for a compartment or mini-compartment, and $106 for a comfort compartment. These competitive fares, combined with the convenience and comfort of overnight travel, are expected to appeal to tourists and business travelers alike.

Revolutionizing European Rail Travel

The introduction of these next-generation Nightjet trains is set to revolutionize overnight travel between major European cities. With enhanced features and flexible fare options, ÖBB aims to provide a superior travel experience that meets the needs of a diverse and growing passenger base. As ÖBB continues to expand its international routes, these Nightjet trains are poised to become a cornerstone of European rail travel, offering an environmentally friendly and comfortable alternative to air travel.
