Starting October 12, 2025, Latvia will implement a new Entry/Exit System (EES) at all border crossing points, aimed at streamlining travel for third-country nationals visiting Europe for short stays. The system will gradually replace traditional passport stamps with a digital registration of entries, exits, and refusals of entry, speeding up border control and supporting border guards in their duties.
The EES will collect biometric data, including fingerprints and facial images, along with travel document information and travel dates. This digital approach is expected to enhance security across the Schengen area, giving border authorities and law enforcement access to essential traveller information to better identify potential risks.
During the transition period, which runs until April 10, 2026, third-country nationals will still receive entry and exit stamps in their passports while their travel data is simultaneously registered in the EES. Automatic calculation of permitted days of stay will not be available until full implementation. This phased rollout is intended to ensure a smooth adaptation for both travellers and border authorities.
Once fully operational across all participating countries after April 10, 2026, the EES will allow passport stamps to be discontinued and enable electronic exchange of traveller information among EU Member States.
The system applies to short-term stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period, calculated across all EES-using countries. Registration in the system is mandatory for third-country nationals traveling with a short-term visa or visa-free for short stays.
The EES will be gradually introduced in 29 European countries, marking a major step toward modernizing border control and facilitating safe and efficient travel throughout the EU.
