As European beaches fill with summer tourists, experts are sounding the alarm over Vibrio bacteria, a fast-spreading seasonal threat that flourishes in warm, low-salinity seawater. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued warnings about a rising risk of vibriosis — a potentially deadly infection — as sea temperatures climb across the continent.
These bacteria, once rare in Europe, are now being detected in increasing concentrations along the Baltic and North Sea coasts, and even parts of the Black Sea. Health authorities say climate change is playing a major role, as marine heatwaves and freshwater runoff are making coastal waters more hospitable to Vibrio.

What Is Vibriosis — And Why Should You Care?
Vibrio bacteria can enter the body in several ways:
Eating raw or undercooked shellfish (especially oysters or mussels)
Swallowing contaminated seawater
Swimming with cuts, scrapes, or open wounds
While some infections may cause mild gastrointestinal issues, certain Vibrio species — like V. vulnificus — can lead to necrotizing fasciitis, a rare but devastating condition where soft tissue rapidly breaks down around a wound. In severe cases, the infection can require intensive care or even limb amputation.
Those most at risk include people with weakened immune systems, liver disease, or chronic illnesses. According to U.S. data, about 1 in 5 people infected with V. vulnificus die within 48 hours. In the U.S., Vibrio bacteria cause roughly 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths annually — and those numbers are slowly rising in Europe too.
Danger Zones in Europe
The highest concentrations of Vibrio have been detected in:
Baltic Sea coastal countries: Denmark, Germany, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and Russia
North Sea coasts: the Netherlands and Belgium
Black Sea regions: Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Ukraine
One reason? Rising river inflows into the Baltic Sea, linked to climate change, are lowering salinity — creating the perfect breeding ground for these bacteria.
Between 1990 and 2024, the average surface temperature of the Baltic Sea has increased by nearly 0.5°C, according to the European Environment Agency. This warming, combined with changing water chemistry, is driving a new kind of summer health hazard in what used to be considered safe, cool northern waters.

Avoid swimming with open wounds or fresh tattoos
Don’t eat raw shellfish unless from trusted sources
Shower after seawater exposure, especially in warmer, enclosed bays
Be especially cautious in regions known for low salinity and shallow waters
What was once a tropical threat is now a growing concern for Northern and Eastern Europe. As climate change reshapes coastlines — and what lives in them — travelers may need to rethink how they swim, eat, and stay safe by the sea.
