Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport in Turkey resumed operations Sunday evening after a wildfire forced it to close for several hours, disrupting flights and causing delays. The airport suspended flights at 4 p.m. local time on June 29, as a forest fire spread to nearby residential areas.
Flights restarted around 9 p.m., with departures on Monday morning heading to destinations including Manchester and Stansted, according to the airport’s online flight board.
Izmir’s mayor, Dr. Cemil Tugay, described the day as challenging due to multiple fires fueled by strong winds around the region. He urged residents to remain vigilant amid ongoing fire risks.
Meanwhile, much of Southern Europe is facing extreme heat warnings, with red alerts active in parts of Portugal, Italy, and Croatia, and amber warnings covering Spain, France, Austria, and neighboring countries—factors likely contributing to increased wildfire risks.
