Tourists who overstay in Bali could now face extended prison sentences, as Indonesia has introduced stricter penalties for breaches of its immigration laws.

According to The Independent, travelers caught with expired visas on Bali may now serve up to 10 years behind bars. Previously, the penalty for this offense ranged from six months to one year of imprisonment.

In addition, if a traveler is suspected of other criminal activities, the prison term could be extended to 20 years, with some cases potentially resulting in life imprisonment.

Silmy Karim, the head of Indonesia’s Immigration Service, stated that the government aims to ensure Indonesia remains a welcoming destination for tourists and foreign investors who follow the rules. At the same time, the tightening of immigration regulations is intended to protect local residents from criminals and foreigners who disrupt public order.

This year alone, more than 400 individuals have been deported from Bali for violating immigration laws.
