MEININGER Hotels Opens First Scotland Property in Edinburgh

MEININGER Hotels will officially open MEININGER Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket on 5 August, marking the brand’s debut in Scotland. The new property becomes the company’s 38th hotel and strengthens its presence in major European city destinations.

Located in Edinburgh‘s West End, the hotel occupies a redeveloped 1970s office building that had stood vacant for several years before being transformed into a modern hospitality destination. The project was developed by S Harrison and constructed by Ogilvie Construction, adding 157 rooms and 549 beds to one of Europe’s busiest tourism markets.

First MEININGER Hotel in Scotland

“Expanding into Edinburgh is a natural next step for our brand,” said Ajit Menon, Chief Executive Officer of MEININGER Hotels. “The city boasts steady year-round tourism, excellent transport connections and a diverse mix of visitors. We are thrilled to revive a long-dormant building, enhance the local hospitality offering and support the growth of Edinburgh’s tourism economy.”

Prime Haymarket Location

Situated in the Haymarket district, the hotel offers convenient access to Edinburgh’s major attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Princes Street, Murrayfield Stadium and the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

Haymarket Station is just a short walk away, providing rail connections across Scotland and the UK, as well as tram services linking the hotel with Edinburgh Airport and the city centre.

The location also positions guests close to major annual events such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, concerts and sporting fixtures.

Hybrid Hotel and Hostel Concept

MEININGER continues to operate its hybrid hospitality model, combining hotel-quality accommodation with the flexibility and social atmosphere traditionally associated with hostels.

Guests can choose from private single, double and multi-bed rooms, as well as individually bookable beds in shared dormitories. Facilities include a guest kitchen, breakfast area, bar, lounge spaces and an outdoor terrace, catering to families, backpackers, student groups, business travellers and conference delegates alike.

European Expansion Continues

The Edinburgh opening forms part of MEININGER Hotels’ ongoing European growth strategy, following recent and planned developments in Barcelona, Strasbourg, Madrid, Porto and Tel Aviv.

The company now operates 38 hotels across 27 European cities, with Dublin scheduled to become its next UK and Ireland property when it opens in 2028.

“Our strategy is based on sustainable, long-term growth rather than rapid expansion,” Menon said. “We continue to invest in destinations where we see long-term potential and where our hybrid concept can offer genuine value to guests. Edinburgh represents an exciting new chapter for MEININGER and an important step in our future growth plans.”

Local Recruitment

Ahead of the opening, the hotel has recruited an international team of around 20 employees across operational and guest service roles.

“We’ve focused on building a collaborative and diverse culture from the very beginning,” said Hotel Manager Will Harrington. “Everyone contributes to the guest experience, and we’re looking forward to welcoming visitors while becoming part of the local community.”
