Anantara Opens First Tented Safari Camp in Zambia’s Kafue National Park

Minor Hotels has expanded its luxury safari portfolio with the opening of Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River, the brand’s first tented safari camp. Located within Zambia’s Kafue National Park, the new property marks a significant milestone as Anantara celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Set within one of Africa’s largest protected conservation areas, the 13-key luxury camp supports the long-term ecological restoration of Kafue National Park in partnership with the Government of Zambia and African Parks.

Luxury Elevated Above the Wilderness

Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River occupies a prime riverside location with nearly seven metres of exclusive frontage along the Kafue River. Elevated at least 3.5 metres above the ground on timber platforms, it is Zambia’s only lodge designed to allow wildlife to move freely beneath the accommodation while offering uninterrupted views across the river.

The camp features nine Pool and Bush Villas, three spectacular Horizon Terrace Suites and a 400-square-metre Presidential Villa.

The Horizon Terrace Suites are the highest accommodation in Zambia, suspended 14.3 metres above the ground and accessed by private glass elevators. Each suite includes expansive viewing decks and elevated star beds for overnight stargazing.

Guests staying in the Pool and Bush Villas enjoy private plunge pools and dedicated in-room spa facilities, while the Presidential Villa offers exclusive boat access, a private wellness area and personalised butler service.

Immersive Safari Experiences

Located within a recovering wilderness that is home to elephants, hippos, lions, leopards, antelope and more than 500 bird species, the camp offers a wide range of guided wildlife experiences.

Activities include traditional game drives, river safaris, guided walking safaris, catch-and-release fishing, bush picnics and birdwatching, allowing guests to explore one of Africa’s least-visited national parks by both land and water.

Dining on the River

Dining is fully integrated into the guest experience, with flexible meal times and unique settings throughout the property.

A floating pontoon on the Kafue River hosts breakfasts, afternoon teas and candlelit dinners above the water, while Luzuba Harvestry serves contemporary Zambian cuisine and Twalumba Bar & Lounge offers cocktails and fireside gatherings.

Guests can also participate in Spice Spoons cooking classes to discover traditional Zambian flavours.

Wellness Meets Nature

Wellness forms a central part of the experience, with Anantara Spa treatments available in every suite and villa alongside private steam facilities—a feature unique among safari lodges in Zambia.

The camp also features a floating Technogym fitness platform anchored on the river, offering open-air workouts, yoga sessions and meditation surrounded by nature.

Designed for Sustainable Luxury

Designed by Meg Ralph Spaces and recognised at the LIV Hospitality Design Awards, the camp has been developed with a strong focus on environmental sustainability.

Operations are powered entirely by solar energy, while on-site water purification, rainwater management and the elimination of single-use plastics minimise the property’s environmental footprint. Prefabricated construction allowed existing trees to be preserved, and low-intensity red lighting is used at night to reduce disturbance to nocturnal wildlife.

Gateway to Kafue National Park

Anantara Tented Camp Kafue River is accessible via private charter flights from Lusaka or Livingstone to Chunga Airstrip, followed by a short transfer into the national park.

The opening represents another step in Minor Hotels’ expansion across Africa while introducing a new benchmark for conservation-focused luxury tourism in one of the continent’s most important protected wilderness areas.
