United Airlines has unveiled a special Stars and Stripes livery for two of its aircraft as the United States prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of its founding. The design has been applied to a Boeing 737 and a Boeing 787.
The airline also said it has reached a major milestone in its military pilot recruitment programme. Since 2024, nearly 600 former service members have joined the carrier as pilots.
The two announcements underline how United is using the anniversary year to highlight both national identity and its links with the armed forces. The airline did not give a date for when the aircraft will enter service, but the new paint scheme is clearly intended as a visible tribute to the milestone.
United described the livery as an occasion-specific design, using the familiar red, white and blue motif associated with the American flag. The airline has not said whether the Stars and Stripes treatment will be expanded to other aircraft in the fleet.
The Boeing 737 and Boeing 787 are two of the carrier’s most important aircraft types, serving domestic and long-haul routes respectively. By choosing both models, United has placed the anniversary branding on aircraft seen by a wide mix of travellers in the US and abroad.
The pilot recruitment figure is significant because airlines in the US and elsewhere have faced intense competition for experienced flight crew in recent years. Bringing in nearly 600 former military personnel since 2024 shows the scale of United’s efforts to tap into that talent pool.
The company has long promoted pathways from military aviation into commercial flying. Former service members often arrive with thousands of hours of flying experience, leadership training and operational discipline, making them attractive recruits for major airlines.
United’s announcement also reflects how airlines increasingly use special liveries to mark big moments and strengthen brand visibility. These aircraft often become public-facing symbols, appearing in photos, on social media and at airports around the world.
The 250th anniversary of the United States is expected to prompt a range of commemorative events across the country. For United, the livery is one of the first visible signs that major brands are preparing for the milestone year.
