IKEA to Host Official Weddings Inside Swedish Stores

Shopping for furniture and getting married could soon become part of the same trip. IKEA is preparing to host official wedding ceremonies inside several of its Swedish stores, giving couples the chance to say “I do” surrounded by the retailer’s famous showroom interiors.

The one-day event will take place on 27 June, when five IKEA stores across Sweden will open their doors to 15 couples selected to take part in the unusual ceremony.

Wedding Ceremonies Inside IKEA Showrooms

Rather than using traditional wedding venues, couples will exchange vows in fully furnished IKEA showrooms. The bride and groom will be able to choose the setting that best matches their style, whether it is a cosy country-inspired living room, a modern Scandinavian interior, or even a balcony decorated with plants and a rocking chair.

The weddings will be legally recognised under Swedish law. Ceremonies will be conducted by an authorised officiant, giving the marriages the same legal status as any other wedding held in Sweden.

Official Requirements Still Apply

Before taking part, couples must complete Sweden’s standard hindersprövning process through the Swedish Tax Agency. This legal review confirms that both individuals are eligible to marry, meaning they are of legal age, not already married, and not closely related.

On the day of the ceremony, couples will be required to present valid identification documents and be accompanied by two adult witnesses, in line with Swedish marriage regulations.

High Demand for Limited Places

The initiative is limited to IKEA stores in Malmö, Linköping, Jönköping, Uddevalla and Karlstad. Interest proved so strong that available places were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis shortly after registration opened.

Each couple will be allowed to invite up to 10 guests to attend the ceremony.

More Than Just a Wedding

IKEA plans to celebrate the occasion with more than just the legal ceremony. Following the weddings, newlyweds and their guests will be treated to a reception featuring a seasonal summer menu.

The retailer will also present each couple with a wedding gift, although social media users have already started joking that the real test of married life will come when the newlyweds try to assemble the gift together at home.

The event is one of IKEA’s most unusual customer experiences to date and highlights the retailer’s growing focus on creating memorable in-store experiences beyond traditional shopping.
