InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort Reopens After Major Luxury Upgrade

InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort has completed the final chapter of its large-scale transformation, unveiling upgraded accommodations, new dining venues, expanded wellness experiences and one of the region’s largest ocean-facing event spaces.

The relaunch represents a major milestone for the luxury beachfront resort as demand grows for destination-led travel experiences that combine leisure, celebrations and wellness within a single property.

Located along Chennai’s scenic East Coast Road, the reimagined resort introduces a renewed vision for luxury hospitality while reinforcing the growing importance of India’s premium coastal travel market.

InterContinental Reinvents Its Chennai Beachfront Experience

Set across 15 acres of landscaped beachfront overlooking the Bay of Bengal, the resort has undergone a multi-million-dollar transformation designed to create a more immersive luxury experience.

The redesign draws inspiration from Mahabalipuram’s historic architecture while blending contemporary aesthetics with local heritage.

Executives say the project reflects broader changes taking place across luxury hospitality, where travelers increasingly prioritize experiences rooted in local culture and wellness.

New Suites And Upgraded Rooms Elevate The Stay Experience

The resort now offers 110 redesigned guestrooms and suites featuring larger layouts, premium amenities and upgraded interiors designed around beachfront living.

Among the most notable additions are luxury suites offering plunge pools, private wellness spaces and panoramic ocean views.

The Grand Presidential Suite includes expansive living areas alongside a jacuzzi and steam room, while the Presidential Suite introduces a private pool and dedicated spa room overlooking the coastline.

Guestrooms throughout the property feature standalone bathtubs, rain showers and views across gardens, pools and the Bay of Bengal.

One Of Chennai’s Largest Beachfront Event Destinations

A major focus of the redevelopment has been expanding the resort’s events and celebrations offering.

The property now features the sea-facing Vaibhava Ballroom spanning more than 12,000 square feet alongside over 70,000 square feet of landscaped beachfront lawns.

Combined, the spaces can accommodate more than 5,000 guests, positioning the resort among the region’s largest destinations for weddings, corporate events and large celebrations.

New Restaurants And Rooftop Experiences Expand Dining Options

The transformation introduces multiple new dining concepts designed around both global influences and local coastal experiences.

Guests can choose from all-day international dining, beachfront dining concepts, rooftop cocktail experiences and specialized Asian cuisine offerings.

Among the additions is a new rooftop lounge offering panoramic views of the coastline, while beachfront venues aim to create more relaxed social experiences overlooking the sea.

The resort has also expanded casual spaces with sports lounges and private gathering areas designed for events and smaller celebrations.

Wellness And Outdoor Experiences Become Central To The Resort

Wellbeing now plays a larger role throughout the property experience.

New additions include meditation gardens, scenic walking trails, sports facilities, pickleball courts, ATV experiences and expanded outdoor recreation spaces.

The resort also introduces wellness-focused experiences such as sunrise meditation sessions, yoga by the beach and herbal-inspired refreshments integrated throughout the guest journey.

For families, dedicated activity areas and supervised experiences have also been expanded.

Luxury Hospitality Growth Continues Across India

The relaunch comes as luxury travel demand continues rising across India, particularly for destination resorts that combine leisure, celebrations and cultural immersion.

Located around one hour from Chennai International Airport and close to Mahabalipuram’s UNESCO-listed heritage sites, the resort aims to capitalize on both domestic and international demand.

As InterContinental continues expanding its luxury footprint across South Asia, the transformation of Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort signals increasing competition among premium hospitality brands seeking to attract experience-driven travelers.
