Air France Flight Diverted To Montreal Over U.S. Ebola Entry Restrictions

An Air France flight travelling from Paris to Detroit was diverted to Montreal after U.S. authorities blocked the aircraft from landing due to passenger entry restrictions linked to Ebola control measures.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), one passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo was mistakenly allowed to board the flight despite current U.S. entry restrictions connected to the Ebola outbreak.

Flight Diverted Before Arrival In Detroit

Air France Flight 378 departed Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport bound for Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport before being redirected to Montreal Trudeau International Airport.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft landed in Montreal at approximately 5:15 p.m. ET.

CBP said U.S. authorities prohibited the aircraft from landing in Detroit after determining that one passenger onboard was subject to special entry rules.

Passenger Boarded “In Error,” Authorities Say

A CBP spokesperson said the passenger should not have boarded the flight under current regulations designed to reduce the risk of Ebola transmission.

Officials did not confirm when the traveller had last been in the Democratic Republic of Congo or whether the individual was displaying any symptoms of illness.

The agency said decisive action was taken to reroute the aircraft away from the United States.

Air France Confirms Diversion Request

Air France confirmed the diversion was carried out at the request of U.S. authorities.

The airline said current U.S. regulations require passengers arriving from certain countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, to enter the United States only through Washington Dulles International Airport.

Air France also stressed there was no medical emergency onboard the aircraft during the flight.

The carrier said airlines are required to comply with all international health and entry regulations imposed by the countries they serve.
