Murcia Emerges As Golf Alternative To Crowded Costa Del Sol

Spain’s Murcia region is increasingly attracting international golf travellers looking to avoid the crowds and rising prices associated with the Costa del Sol, as demand grows for quieter and more affordable Mediterranean destinations.

Long recognised as Spain’s traditional golf tourism hub, the Costa del Sol continues to dominate the market with around 70 golf courses, making it the country’s largest golf destination. The region also accounts for roughly 67% of Andalusia’s golf supply and remains one of Europe’s most established golf tourism markets.

However, rising visitor numbers, increasing accommodation costs and growing congestion are encouraging more travellers to explore alternatives elsewhere in southern Spain. Costa del Sol tourism reached a record 14.6 million visitors in 2025, placing additional pressure on infrastructure, transport networks and hotel availability.

Murcia Gains Momentum Among Golf Travellers

Murcia has emerged as one of the main beneficiaries of this shift, offering year-round sunshine, modern golf resorts, shorter travel distances and a more relaxed atmosphere compared to some of Spain’s busiest coastal destinations.

Golf developments across the region have expanded significantly in recent years, with courses designed by internationally recognised architects and integrated resort communities attracting visitors from the United Kingdom, Scandinavia and northern Europe.

Several golf resorts are increasingly targeting long-stay travellers and winter tourism markets seeking quieter Mediterranean destinations outside the traditional Costa del Sol circuit.

Affordability Strengthens Murcia’s Appeal

Travel industry professionals say affordability remains one of Murcia’s strongest competitive advantages.

Green fees, accommodation and dining costs are often noticeably lower than in more established Spanish golf destinations, making the region particularly attractive for longer stays and off-season travel.

The lower overall holiday cost has become increasingly important as European travellers continue facing rising travel and accommodation prices across major Mediterranean tourism markets.

Spain’s Golf Tourism Sector Continues Expanding

Spain’s golf tourism industry continues to grow rapidly. The country welcomed more than 1.4 million golf tourists in 2023, generating an estimated economic impact exceeding €14 billion.

Industry estimates suggest demand for golf-focused holidays continues rising as travellers increasingly prioritise sports tourism, wellness experiences and year-round outdoor travel.

Murcia’s own golf sector has also recorded strong growth, with regional golf federation registrations reportedly increasing by nearly 38% over the past six years — one of the fastest growth rates in Spain.

Improved Connectivity Supports Growth

Accessibility to Murcia has improved significantly in recent years, with Región de Murcia International Airport expanding air connections to several European destinations.

Alicante Airport, located within driving distance of many of Murcia’s golf resorts, continues providing additional international access for travellers arriving from across Europe.

Region Expands Beyond Golf Tourism

Beyond golf, Murcia is also promoting its beaches, gastronomy and wellness tourism as part of a wider strategy to attract higher-spending international visitors seeking quieter Mediterranean experiences.

Regional tourism authorities are increasingly positioning Murcia as a more spacious and less congested alternative to Spain’s traditional coastal resort hotspots.

Spain’s Tourism Landscape Continues Diversifying

As Spain’s tourism sector continues diversifying beyond its most heavily visited coastal regions, Murcia is strengthening its position as a growing destination for golf travellers seeking lower costs, modern resort infrastructure and a more relaxed environment.
