Ryanair is considering increasing bonuses for employees who identify passengers travelling with oversized cabin baggage after the airline reported a decline in violations.
The Irish low-cost carrier increased staff rewards in November 2025 from €1.50 to €2.50 for each passenger found carrying baggage exceeding the permitted size limits.
However, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary suggested the current incentive may no longer be sufficient following a noticeable drop in the number of passengers caught with oversized bags.
Fewer Oversized Bags Detected
Speaking to The Times, O’Leary said the number of oversized baggage cases had fallen significantly since reports emerged that staff were receiving bonuses for identifying violations.
“The number of oversized bags is falling, I don’t know, from 0.0001% to 0.00001%,” O’Leary said.
He added that Ryanair could increase the commission paid to employees from €2.50 to around €3.50 as the number of violations continues to decline.
Strict Cabin Bag Enforcement Continues
O’Leary also warned passengers not to arrive at the airport with bags that do not fit into Ryanair’s baggage measuring devices.
Passengers found carrying oversized cabin baggage can face additional charges of up to €75 at the airport.
Ryanair has long maintained strict baggage rules as part of its low-cost operating model, with ancillary fees representing a significant source of revenue for the airline.
The carrier continues to encourage passengers to carefully check baggage dimensions before travelling to avoid additional airport charges.
