United Airlines Returns to Glasgow With New Daily Newark Service

United Airlines has officially resumed nonstop flights between Glasgow and Newark/New York, marking the return of direct air service between Glasgow and the United States for the first time since 2019.

The airline celebrated the arrival of its inaugural seasonal flight at Glasgow Airport yesterday, with the new route operating daily between Glasgow and United’s Newark hub near New York City.

United is currently the only U.S. airline offering nonstop flights between Glasgow and the United States.

United Expands Scottish Network

The relaunched Glasgow route strengthens United’s existing operations across Scotland, where the carrier already operates year-round daily flights between Edinburgh and Newark/New York.

The airline also offers services between Edinburgh and Washington D.C., alongside seasonal flights connecting Edinburgh with Chicago O’Hare.

For Summer 2026, United plans to operate up to four nonstop flights per day between Scotland and the United States, giving the airline the largest U.S. network of any carrier serving the Scottish market.

Greater U.S. Connectivity Through Newark

Karolien De Hertogh, Director Sales UK and Ireland at United Airlines, said the return to Glasgow reflects the importance of Scotland within the airline’s international network.

She said passengers travelling from Scotland will benefit from convenient onward connections through United’s U.S. hubs to more than 220 destinations across the Americas.

At the same time, the route is expected to make it easier for American travellers to visit Glasgow and explore Scotland’s wider tourism attractions, including the Highlands.

Boost For Tourism And Trade

Glasgow Airport chief executive Kam Jandu described the return of the route as a major milestone for connectivity and regional growth.

He said the service had historically been popular with both leisure and business travellers while also supporting exports including Scottish whisky and seafood.

The airport believes the new flights will strengthen inbound tourism and provide improved access to destinations across North America through Newark Airport.

Part Of Wider Airport Investment Plans

The return of the U.S. service comes as Glasgow Airport continues work on its wider £350 million investment programme aimed at improving passenger experience and expanding international connectivity.

Local officials also welcomed the announcement, highlighting the importance of direct links with the United States for tourism, investment and economic development.

Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said the United States remains one of Glasgow’s most important international markets and described the new route as a valuable addition for business and visitor travel on both sides of the Atlantic.
