Etihad Airways Adds 5 China Routes and 28 Weekly Flights

Etihad Airways has announced a major expansion in mainland China, adding five new routes and increasing frequencies across its network. The Abu Dhabi-based carrier said the move would add a total of 28 weekly flights, significantly boosting capacity between the United Arab Emirates and China.

The expansion marks one of the airline’s largest single-market growth strategies in recent years. It reflects rising demand for travel between China and the Gulf, as well as Etihad’s ambition to strengthen its position in a competitive long-haul market.

The new routes and added frequencies are expected to improve connectivity for both business and leisure travellers, linking key Chinese cities with Abu Dhabi and onward destinations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Etihad Airways has been steadily rebuilding and expanding its global network following pandemic-era reductions. China has emerged as a priority market as international travel demand rebounds and bilateral ties between China and the UAE deepen.

The airline plans to deploy a mix of wide-body aircraft on the new services, increasing seat capacity and cargo capability. This is expected to support not only passenger travel but also trade flows, particularly in high-value and time-sensitive goods.

Industry analysts say the expansion reflects a broader trend among Gulf carriers, which are positioning themselves as key connectors between Asia, Europe and beyond. Abu Dhabi’s geographic location allows airlines such as Etihad to offer efficient one-stop connections across continents.

The increase of 28 weekly flights represents a substantial capacity boost. It signals confidence in sustained demand growth despite ongoing economic uncertainties in global aviation markets. Tourism authorities in both the UAE and China are expected to benefit from the increased connectivity. Greater flight capacity can stimulate inbound tourism, business travel and cultural exchange, supporting broader economic ties.
