One of the most iconic attractions at Walt Disney World is set to return with a fresh experience, as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad prepares to reopen following a major refurbishment.
Originally opened in 1980, the classic ride closed in early 2025 for what Disney described as a “mountaintop-to-cavern refurbishment.” Now, guests can expect a mix of nostalgia and new elements when the attraction reopens.
What’s new on the ride
The updated version of Big Thunder Mountain introduces new show scenes and storytelling features, including a reimagined journey through the Rainbow Caverns. According to Disney, these environments will bring new visual effects and surprises, adding depth to the ride’s narrative.
New ride vehicles have also been introduced, designed to enhance comfort and overall experience while maintaining the attraction’s signature fast-paced, twisting track.
More accessible for families
One of the biggest changes is the updated height requirement. Previously set at 41 inches, the minimum height has now been lowered to 38 inches.
This adjustment opens the ride to a wider range of younger guests, making it more accessible for families visiting the park together.
A classic reimagined
Often described as the “wildest ride in the wilderness,” Big Thunder Mountain remains a cornerstone of the Magic Kingdom experience. The refurbishment aims to modernize the attraction while preserving its original charm and western-themed adventure.
For visitors planning a trip to Disney World, the reopening adds another reason to return — combining a familiar favorite with new features designed for a new generation of guests.
