Walt Disney has announced plans to launch a new cruise ship from Tokyo starting in fiscal 2028, marking the addition of a ninth vessel to the brand’s growing fleet. This new ship will be modeled after the Wish, the largest vessel in Disney’s fleet, and is part of a partnership with the Oriental Land Company (OLC), the operator of Tokyo Disneyland. This initiative is a component of Disney’s ambitious 10-year, $60 billion expansion of its theme parks and cruise business.
The expansion of Disney’s cruise line comes at a time when the industry is experiencing a strong recovery from the global shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the number of passengers is expected to reach 34.7 million this year, a 17% increase from 2019.
