Poland Launches Retro Rail Journeys with PKP Intercity’s “Nieśpieszny” Project

Poland’s national rail operator PKP Intercity has unveiled a new tourism concept designed to slow travel down and bring nostalgia back on track.

The project, titled “Nieśpieszny” – meaning “unhurried” – invites passengers to explore Poland aboard restored trains from the 1980s, blending vintage aesthetics with contemporary safety and comfort standards.

The first departures are scheduled for April 17, 2026, with a total of 40 trips planned. Routes will change weekly, covering some of the country’s most scenic regions and offering a curated, slow-paced travel experience.

For the project, PKP Intercity has refurbished electric locomotives and carriages dating back to the late 20th century. While fully modernised from a technical standpoint, the trains retain their original interiors and design elements, preserving the atmosphere of a different era.

A highlight of the journey is the onboard dining car operated by WARS, a historic brand serving rail passengers since 1948. Guests will be offered traditional Polish dishes, including żurek and bigos, reinforcing the cultural dimension of the experience.

Each trip accommodates around 200 passengers. Standard rules apply for luggage, bicycles, and pets, making the service accessible to a broad range of travellers.

The launch coincides with two milestones: the 25th anniversary of PKP Intercity and the 100th anniversary of Polskie Koleje Państwowe.

Tickets will go on sale in the second half of March via the official website, mobile app, and station ticket offices. The initiative is already being positioned as one of Poland’s most distinctive travel experiences of the year – where nostalgia, gastronomy, and slow tourism converge.
