Banksy – One of the Art World’s Biggest Modern Mysteries May Have Just Been Solved

For decades, the identity of Banksy has been one of the art world’s most persistent enigmas – a mystery that has fueled speculation, conspiracy theories, and global fascination. Now, a new investigation suggests that the answer may finally be clear.

A report published by Reuters claims to have definitively identified the elusive graffiti artist as Robin Gunningham, a name long whispered in art circles but never fully confirmed. According to journalists Simon Gardner, James Pearson, and Blake Morrison, the evidence now establishes the connection “beyond dispute.”

The investigation systematically revisits – and ultimately dismisses – some of the most widely circulated theories. Among them: that Banksy could be Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack, or Thierry Guetta, the eccentric figure featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Instead, the report traces a more grounded path to Gunningham. A key piece of evidence stems from “Banksy Captured,” a 2019 memoir by Steve Lazarides, who worked closely with the artist between the late 1990s and 2008. Around the time of the book’s release, Lazarides shared a photograph from 2000 showing an unfinished Banksy piece – a defaced Marc Jacobs billboard in New York – reportedly abandoned after the artist was detained by authorities.

Gunningham is not a new suspect. In 2008, Daily Mail identified him as the likely figure behind Banksy, noting that he had legally changed his name to David Jones that same year. Yet despite periodic claims, the mystery endured, bolstered by alternative theories and the artist’s own careful cultivation of anonymity.

Since emerging in the early 1990s, Banksy has transformed from a guerrilla street artist into a global cultural force. His instantly recognizable stencil style – often infused with political commentary and dark humor – has appeared on walls in London, New York City, and even conflict zones such as Ukraine and the West Bank.

Despite – or perhaps because of – his anonymity, Banksy’s work has achieved immense commercial and cultural value. Pieces have been acquired by celebrities including Brad Pitt and Chris Martin, while his public interventions continue to generate headlines worldwide.
