GOL Launches Lisbon Flights and Plans Paris, Orlando

Brazilian airline GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes is entering the long-haul market for the first time with the introduction of the Airbus A330neo, announcing new routes to Lisbon, Paris and Orlando as part of a major international expansion.

The low-cost carrier confirmed last week that it will receive five A330neo aircraft, with the first delivery expected later this year and the full fleet arriving by the end of 2027. The widebody jets will seat nearly 300 passengers and are capable of operating flights lasting up to 15 hours, significantly expanding the airline’s network reach beyond South America.

Lisbon will become the airline’s first European destination using the aircraft. Flights between Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon are scheduled to begin on 16 September and will operate four times per week.

The new service will compete directly with TAP Air Portugal, which currently operates double-daily flights between the two cities using a mix of Airbus A330-200 and A330neo aircraft.

GOL said the route will be supported by connections through its hub at Rio de Janeiro–Galeão International Airport, where passengers will be able to connect to more than 30 destinations across Brazil and South America, including five international routes within the region.

Additional long-haul routes are also planned. The airline confirmed that details for services to Paris and Orlando will be announced soon, both expected to utilise the new A330neo aircraft.

The Paris route will place GOL in direct competition with Air France, which already operates daily flights between Paris and Rio de Janeiro. Orlando, however, will represent a different market dynamic. A planned four-times-weekly service from Rio de Janeiro would operate without direct competition.

GOL already serves Orlando from Brazil, operating daily flights from Brasília and a weekly service from Fortaleza using the Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The airline has also confirmed that its first long-haul route using the A330neo platform will connect Rio de Janeiro with John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

That route is scheduled to launch on 8 July 2026, initially using a wet-leased Airbus A330-200 from Spanish carrier Wamos Air. GOL’s own A330neo aircraft will take over operations once deliveries begin.

The move marks a major strategic shift for the airline, which has traditionally focused on short- and medium-haul routes within South America. Expanding into the long-haul market will allow the carrier to tap into growing travel demand between Brazil, North America and Europe.

According to the airline, network growth has also been influenced by operational constraints around some of South America’s largest cities, particularly Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where dense urban development around airports can limit expansion opportunities.

With new widebody aircraft and multiple intercontinental routes in the pipeline, GOL is positioning itself as a new competitor in the transatlantic and Brazil–United States travel markets.
