Mauritius Plans to Introduce New ETA Entry System for All Travelers

Mauritius is preparing to overhaul its border procedures with the introduction of a new electronic travel authorization system, known as ETA. According to reporting by Nairametrics, which cites Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, the platform is part of a broader effort to modernize border controls and simplify entry for visitors. Current entry rules remain in place while the system is being developed.

The government views the new digital infrastructure as essential for supporting tourism growth. Mauritius welcomed around 1.4 million visitors in 2025, and authorities hope that more efficient border security systems and improved digital processes will help increase that number in the coming years.

The ETA will function as an online pre-travel screening mechanism that passengers must complete before boarding their flight to Mauritius. Officials say the platform is expected to reduce queues on arrival, cut down on manual document handling, and give border services better tools for screening incoming passengers.

Operational details have not yet been announced, and the timeline for implementation also remains unclear. However, Mauritius has indicated that the ETA may become mandatory for all travelers, including citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access. Russia is among the nations that could be affected if the measure becomes universal.

The introduction of the ETA is positioned as a step toward aligning Mauritius with global best practices in border management while supporting its ambitions to grow tourism and enhance security screening capabilities.
