Turkish Airlines has resumed its direct flights between Istanbul and Mombasa, marking an important moment for Kenya’s coastal tourism, trade, and international connectivity.
According to the Kenya Airports Authority, the inaugural flight touched down at Moi International Airport early Monday morning, greeted by a traditional water cannon salute. Airport officials, tourism leaders, and government representatives were on hand to welcome the crew and passengers arriving from Istanbul.
The airline will now operate three weekly flights using the Boeing 737 MAX 8, carrying both passengers and up to eight tons of cargo per trip. The route’s return is expected to boost regional trade, open new tourism markets, and create stronger links between East Africa, Europe, and beyond.
“The renewed route connects Kenya’s coast to the world, fueling tourism, trade, and adventure,” the Kenya Airports Authority said in a statement.
Turkish Airlines also marked the occasion online with the message: “Jambo Mombasa! Starting 26 October, this stunning coastal city is just a flight away.”
The relaunch not only reconnects Mombasa to one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs but also repositions the city as a gateway to global travel and investment. With its white-sand beaches, Swahili heritage, and strategic location on the Indian Ocean, Mombasa remains one of East Africa’s most dynamic destinations for both leisure and business.
Industry representatives have welcomed the move, noting that the new service coincides with Kenya’s peak tourist season. A spokesperson from the Kenya Tourism Federation described the development as “a major boost for tourism and trade along the coast.”
From Mombasa’s Old Town and Fort Jesus to the beaches of Diani, Watamu, and Malindi, the renewed connection promises to bring a new wave of visitors and opportunities. With Turkish Airlines serving more than 120 countries, Kenya’s coast is now closer to the world than ever before.
