Barcelona’s beloved La Mercè celebrations are getting an extraordinary addition this year: the Sagrada Família is offering 20,000 free tickets for the public to step inside Antoni Gaudí’s world-famous basilica.
The open days will take place on September 19, 20, 21, and 24, giving visitors a rare chance to explore the interior of the monument free of charge. On most days, the basilica will welcome guests from 4 pm to 8 pm, with Saturday, September 20, running slightly earlier from 3 pm to 6 pm.
These special visits will highlight not only the basilica’s soaring spaces but also one of its latest sculptural additions: The Wedding at Cana. Standing three meters tall, the stone piece is part of the future Chapel of the Assumption, which will eventually include other scenes such as The Presentation of Mary at the Temple, The Death of Saint Joseph, and The Dormition.
Registration for the ticket lottery is open from September 8 at 10 am until September 14 at 9 pm, with forms available online in Catalan and Spanish. Winners will be notified on September 15.
The event comes as the Sagrada Família continues to make history. In July, the basilica surpassed all other buildings in the Barcelona skyline, reaching 155.58 meters in height. Once complete, it is expected to rise to 172.5 meters, cementing its place as Gaudí’s most iconic masterpiece.
