Spanish National Police have arrested 34 suspects linked to organised luxury watch robbery networks during the first four months of 2026 as part of a specialised nationwide crackdown.
The investigation has so far led to the resolution of 41 violent robberies connected to criminal groups operating across Spain’s major tourist destinations.
Authorities say the criminal organisations are largely based in Barcelona but travel throughout the country targeting wealthy visitors and luxury shopping areas.
Tourist Destinations Targeted Across Spain
The networks have been linked to crimes committed in cities and resort destinations including Madrid, Málaga, Marbella, Alicante, Palma and Ibiza.
Police say the groups specifically target high-end watches from luxury brands, with stolen items valued between €15,000 and €100,000.
Between January and April 2026, investigators arrested 33 suspects in Spain and one additional suspect in France.
The operation has also led to the investigation of one homicide case, three assaults causing bodily harm, one theft case and offences linked to organised criminal activity.
Police Identify Additional Suspects
Spanish authorities say another 43 individuals connected to the criminal networks have already been identified and are currently awaiting arrest.
The National Police described the specialised investigative unit as an unprecedented initiative created to permanently coordinate investigations into organised luxury watch theft operations nationwide.
Highly Organised Criminal Networks
Investigators say the gangs operate using highly structured systems that provide members with false documents, vehicles and temporary accommodation.
Once arriving in a destination, the groups reportedly carry out surveillance on potential victims before selecting the moment to strike.
Many of the robberies involve violence, with suspects often working in teams where one individual commits the theft while others monitor the area or coordinate escape routes.
Authorities said some groups also use additional support vehicles to quickly transport stolen watches and complicate recovery efforts.
Ibiza Incident Highlighted Serious Risks
Police referenced a fatal incident in Ibiza last year in which a victim died after being knocked to the ground during a struggle over a luxury watch.
The case underlined the increasing violence associated with this type of organised robbery targeting tourists and luxury consumers.
Use Of False Documents And Disguises
According to investigators, suspects frequently use caps, sunglasses and face masks to avoid identification.
The groups also reportedly rely on false documentation to rent vehicles and accommodation, while some vehicles used in crimes carried duplicated number plates.
After carrying out the robberies, the suspects typically return quickly to Barcelona, where stolen watches are later sold or distributed.
