Lufthansa’s Legendary Lockheed Super Star Returns to Frankfurt for Public Display

A rare piece of aviation history touched down in Frankfurt on Wednesday evening as Lufthansa welcomed the legendary Lockheed Super Star to its new home — the future Lufthansa Conference and Visitor Center. From spring 2026, visitors will be able to see the restored aircraft up close in a permanent exhibition marking the airline’s rich heritage.

Once a symbol of 1950s elegance and engineering excellence, the Super Star has been meticulously repainted in its original Lufthansa livery, guided by historical archives and restored by experts at Lufthansa Technik’s Graphics Solutions division. The fuselage and tail have already arrived in Frankfurt via heavy-duty transport, with the wings set to follow next week.

When the new visitor center opens, the Super Star will be showcased alongside another icon, the Junkers Ju 52, both visible through a striking glass façade. The opening will coincide with the 100th anniversary of the first Lufthansa, celebrating a century of pioneering aviation.

A Transatlantic Marvel
Introduced to the Lufthansa fleet in 1957, the Lockheed Super Star was the first aircraft to feature the airline’s exclusive Senator class. It was primarily deployed on non-stop transatlantic flights to New York — journeys of up to 17 hours powered by four piston engines, marking the end of the classic propeller era. Measuring 35.42 meters in length with a 45.18-meter wingspan, the Super Star was a feat of its time.

The Future Lufthansa Conference and Visitor Center
Located near the Lufthansa Aviation Center at Frankfurt Airport, the upcoming venue will blend corporate collaboration spaces with a showcase for aviation enthusiasts. Visitors will find historical exhibits, many on public display for the first time, as well as a coffee lounge and event facilities open to the public. The Super Star and Ju 52 will serve as the centerpiece attractions — tangible reminders of Lufthansa’s past as it looks toward the future of flight.
