Marriott International has officially acquired citizenM, the trailblazing lifestyle hotel brand known for its bold design, tech-forward approach, and commitment to value-conscious travelers. The move adds a fresh layer to Marriott’s growing global portfolio, strengthening its position in the highly competitive select-service and lifestyle hospitality segments.
With 37 operating hotels and 8,789 rooms across more than 20 cities spanning the U.S., Europe, and Asia Pacific, citizenM introduces a distinct, design-centric personality to the Marriott family. Two additional hotels currently in development—totaling over 300 rooms—will also be integrated into Marriott’s expanding pipeline.
“As travelers continue to seek innovative lodging offerings that blend technology with genuine, people-first hospitality, the citizenM brand is the perfect addition to our portfolio,” said Anthony Capuano, President and CEO of Marriott International. “Marriott has proven success in growing select-service lifestyle offerings, including our AC, Moxy, and Aloft brands, and we look forward to accelerating citizenM’s global reach with our guests and Marriott Bonvoy members around the world.”
A New Era for citizenM
Founded in 2008, citizenM has redefined affordable luxury for the modern traveler. Its hotels feature smart room technology, modular yet stylish design, and dynamic social spaces, including art-filled living rooms, rooftop terraces, and multifunctional meeting zones.
The brand’s signature blend of tech-savvy comfort and cultural creativity has resonated with urban travelers who seek more than just a place to sleep—they want personality, functionality, and community.
What’s Next for Travelers
Marriott will now begin integrating citizenM into its ecosystem, a process expected to complete later this year. During the transition, citizenM properties will continue to be available through their existing digital channels. Once integrated:
citizenM will become a fully participating brand in the Marriott Bonvoy® loyalty program, offering members new earning and redemption opportunities in sought-after global cities.
Details regarding the future of citizenM’s own subscription program will be shared in the coming months, as Marriott works to align it with its broader loyalty framework.
Expanding Select-Service Innovation
This acquisition is part of Marriott’s broader strategy to scale its select-service and lifestyle offerings, especially in urban and international markets. With existing success through Moxy, Aloft, and AC Hotels, citizenM adds a bold, digitally native brand with strong Gen Z and millennial appeal.
As Marriott’s influence continues to grow across both legacy luxury and forward-looking lifestyle sectors, the addition of citizenM marks a pivotal step in delivering design-forward, tech-enabled experiences that resonate with the next generation of global travelers.
