Spain Approves €351 Million Extra Investment for Airports Including Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Bilbao, Alicante and Málaga

The Spanish Council of Ministers has approved an additional €351 million investment to accelerate key upgrades at airports across the country, supplementing the current Airport Regulation Document (DORA II) covering 2022–2026. This funding will bring forward essential infrastructure improvements originally planned for 2027 and beyond.

Significant projects benefiting from the boost include major terminal remodeling at Palma de Mallorca Airport, where €84 million will shorten construction timelines, enhancing passenger flow during peak seasons. Other airports receiving upgrades include Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Valencia, Bilbao, César Manrique-Lanzarote, Ibiza, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Menorca, and both Tenerife Norte and Tenerife Sur.

The investment focuses on modernizing infrastructure to meet new regulatory requirements, improving safety, bolstering cybersecurity (€62 million allocated), and boosting passenger experience through automation technologies such as Explosive Detection System for Cabin Baggage (EDS-CB) and Automatic Tray Return Systems (ATRS) (€86 million). An additional €7 million will fund remote-controlled boarding bridges, enhancing operational efficiency.

Aena will also dedicate €13 million toward electrification initiatives supporting airport decarbonization efforts and another €6 million for legionellosis prevention measures in compliance with new regulations.

Looking ahead, the upcoming DORA III investment plan (2027–2031) promises to be the largest wave of airport funding in decades. Aena is currently finalizing proposals for all Spanish airports and will consult with airlines to ensure continued growth and modernization of Spain’s airport infrastructure.
