Turkish Airlines subsidiary AJet has announced its expansion into the Algerian market, solidifying its growing presence in Africa. Beginning December 25, 2024, the airline will operate regular flights connecting Turkish cities Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya with Algerian destinations Algiers, Oran, and Constantine.
Strengthening Ties Between Algeria and Turkey
In a press release dated November 28, 2024, AJet emphasized its mission to strengthen cultural, commercial, and tourism ties between the two nations. “We are committed to offering quality services at competitive prices,” said Ayoub Ouahabi, AJet’s general manager in Algeria and the first Algerian director appointed by Turkish Airlines. He highlighted the airline’s role in fostering enhanced economic and cultural cooperation through improved connectivity.
From AnadoluJet to AJet
AJet, which was rebranded from AnadoluJet in March 2024, aims to redefine low-cost travel globally. Initially founded in 2008 to boost connectivity within Turkey’s Anatolian region, the airline now serves 122 destinations worldwide and has ambitions to become the world’s largest low-cost carrier. Over the next decade, AJet plans to expand its fleet to 200 aircraft. Its current lineup includes a mix of Airbus A320s, A320neos, A321s, A321neos, Boeing 737 MAX 8s, and 737-800s, ensuring versatile service capabilities.
Rising Competition in Algeria’s Aviation Market
Algeria is emerging as a key focus for international airlines. AJet’s entry comes amid heightened competition, as Etihad Airways recently announced plans for new flights to Algeria starting in November 2025. However, this announcement sparked controversy, with Algiers Airport stating that no agreement had been finalized with the UAE-based airline.
AJet’s Algeria expansion underlines its commitment to growing its African footprint while providing travelers with affordable, comfortable, and reliable options for regional and international journeys.
