Saudi Arabia is set to introduce the innovative Candela P-12 electric water taxi, which will “fly over water” using hydrofoils. This cutting-edge transportation solution is part of the ambitious Neom project and will be offered to both residents and tourists in the futuristic city of The Line. By 2039, The Line is expected to house millions of people.
An initial order has been placed for eight passenger vessels, all of which will have zero carbon emissions. The first of these advanced watercraft are expected to be delivered in 2025.
The P-12 model will accommodate up to 30 passengers and can reach speeds of 46 km/h, with a battery life allowing for more than two hours of operation on a single charge. The craft will rise above the water on computer-controlled hydrofoils, ensuring a smooth and quiet ride with a minimal carbon footprint. “The system operates extremely quietly and produces only a negligible carbon trace,” said Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela.
According to the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, over its operational lifetime, the P-12 will emit 97.5% less CO2 compared to traditional diesel-powered vessels of a similar size.
The Neom megaproject aims to transform the Saudi Arabian desert into ten futuristic regions, including a floating port city and a yachting hub. The kingdom is investing over half a trillion dollars to bring this vision to life.
