French multinational transportation company Alstom and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have signed a framework agreement worth over €100 million to modernize 449 trains. The contract, which runs until 2030, includes the installation of ETCS Baseline 3.6 onboard signaling equipment.
The initial phase of the project will focus on upgrading 195 trains, with the remaining trains being modernized in subsequent years. All modernization work will be carried out under Alstom’s supervision at ÖBB’s workshops in Linz and Vienna.
A key aspect of the modernization project is the implementation of ETCS Baseline 3.6, a standardized European rail signaling system that enables trains to operate at shorter intervals and increases the overall capacity of the rail network. This upgrade is expected to significantly improve the efficiency and reliability of ÖBB’s rail services.
