The Sukhumi Airport in Abkhazia is planned to open by the summer season of 2025, with a test flight scheduled for this year, Deputy Minister of Tourism of the republic, Astamur Bartsits, informed journalists.
“According to our information, the airport will commence operations in test mode this summer, with a test flight. We anticipate that by 2025, the airport will be ready to welcome tourists,” Bartsits said.
Bartsits highlighted that the opening of Sukhumi Airport will enable residents from distant regions of Russia to choose Abkhazia as a vacation destination, significantly reducing travel time.
“Additionally, the airport will boost the development of the domestic segment of the tourism market. Nearby, mini-hotels, shops, and other supporting infrastructure will emerge,” he added.
Previously, the Russian Ministry of Economic Development reported that the investment volume for the project to restore air connectivity between Russia and Abkhazia would exceed 12 billion rubles. The reconstruction of the airport is being carried out by the Russian company LLC “Infrastructure Development.”
At the 2023 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Russia and Abkhazia signed an agreement to reconstruct the international airport in Sukhumi, which has been closed since the early 1990s.
