Russia and Kyrgyzstan to Cooperate on Kyrgyz Rail Network

A memorandum of cooperation on projects to develop the rail network in the Kyrgyz Republic was concluded in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on 28 March 2019.

The document was signed by Yevgeny Dietrich, the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, Oleg Belozerov, the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of OJSC Russian Railways, Zhanat Beishenov, the Minister of Transport and Roads of the Kyrgyz Republic, and Kanatbek Abdykerimov, the Managing Director of the State Enterprise National Company Kyrgyz Temir Jolu [Kyrgyz Railways].

The memorandum notes the positive development and the effectiveness of joint action to develop a preliminary feasibility study of projects for the phased development of the rail network in the Kyrgyz Republic, in particular the completion of the first stage of the documentation development in February this year.

Among the projects under consideration, the document indicates the construction of a China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway line and a railway junction linking Kyrgyzstan’s northern and southern regions.

According to the results of the preliminary feasibility study, the parties intend to put forward proposals for their participation in the implementation of projects to develop Kyrgyzstan’s rail network.
