Portugal is set to construct an entire village for surfers by 2026, featuring an artificial wave pool to provide surfers with a dedicated space for practice. The village will also include restaurants, sports shops, skate parks, tennis courts, and a surfing school, as reported by Portugal News.
The municipality of Obidos, known for its medieval landmarks and long-standing appeal to history enthusiasts, is spearheading the initiative. The local authorities aim to boost tourist interest in the region and attract visitors with a surfer-centric village.
The new resort will introduce Portugal’s first artificial wave pool, named Surf Park, built according to modern standards. The surf pool with artificial waves is designed to be energy-efficient and water-conserving.
Spanning a total area of 5 hectares, the “surfing village” comes with a price tag of 30 million euros. The construction is slated for completion by December 2026.
Surfing has become as popular in Portugal as sightseeing tours or exploring historical landmarks, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe. Some of Portugal’s premier surfing locations include Espinho Beach, Cabedelo Beach in Figuera da Foz, Norte Nazare, and the town of Ericeira. The new surf village aims to further solidify Portugal’s reputation as a top destination for surfers worldwide.
